Alternatives to the ITAP

Suggestions for tax assistance for individuals whose income is above the income limit of $60,000, or who are otherwise unable to take advantage of ITAP's on-campus services.

A.     For students with F-1 or J-1 visas who have been in the US less than six years, or for Research and Short-Term Scholars who have been in the US less than three years, we recommend:

1. Sprintax Software

Do-it-yourself tax preparation software specifically designed for F-1 and J-1 non-resident students and scholars
The standard fee for one federal, and one state return: $67.90 to $75.90

B.     For students with F-1 or J-1 visas who have been in the US for any part of more than five years, or for Research or Short-Term Scholars who have been in the US for more than two of the last six years, and were in the US  for more than half of the current tax year (183 days or more), you qualify to file as a resident. This means the tax rules are the same as for US citizens. Therefore, you are able to use any form of tax preparation:

                   a. Any of the individuals listed above.

                   b. Turbotax, TaxAct, or any tax preparation software other than Sprintax.

                   c. H & R Block, Jackson-Hewitt, or any commercial tax service.

                   d. Any CPA firm.
