Tax Assistance Program - South Bend Community

The Notre Dame and Saint Mary's Tax Assistance Program ("TAP") has been providing free basic income tax return preparation services to low income individuals and families in the South Bend community for fifty years. TAP was started in 1972 by Professor Ken Milani who recognized the need for free services provided by reliable and trusted individuals. In 1999, the family of Vivian Harrington Gray made a very generous donation to the University to further endow the work of this very important program. Mrs. Gray was a long-time supporter of both the University of Notre Dame and the volunteer income tax programs. The generosity of her family continues to fuel the mission of TAP.

TAP is staffed by Notre Dame and Saint Mary's students. In addition to the University course work. all students must take and pass tax law training that meets the IRS standards to be a registered Volunteer Income Tax Assistance participant. The technical training is supplemented with information covering ethics and the maintenance of the privacy and confidentiality of taxpayer information.

TAP services are limited to the preparation of federal and Indiana individual income tax returns. Please refer to the Site Location Page for the specific location and times.
